What I’ve Just Finished Reading

The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu
It's available for free online here. A really affecting story. What made it for me where the small details, like the water buffalo wanting to wallow and jumping into the soy sauce.

What I’m Reading Now

The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
I really like Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, so I picked this up at a book flea market. I'm not very far in yet. I'm currently at the point where professor Challenger invites the protagonist back into his house after having bodily thrown him out a moment before. He's certainly a memorable character. I loved the interaction with his wife.

What I Plan to Read Next

Probably This Census-Taker by China Mieville since it needs to go back to the library soon.

What I’ve Just Finished Reading

Paper Girls Volume 2 by Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson.
This wasn't really for me. When I started the first volume, I thought it would be about a bunch of girls in the eighties delivering news papers together and their struggles and growing relationships. I still kind of would have been more interested in that story than in the time travel shenanigans I actually got. Plus the girl's personalities are too sketched in for me to connect to them strongly. I might give the third volume a try if my library buys it, otherwise I'll give it a pass.

What I’m Reading Now

Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics' Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders, and Elusive Olympic Dreams by Jennifer Sey
This makes me really glad that I've never been in professional sports. Even leaving aside the downright abusive and neglectful incidents - of which there are plenty - there's so much cruelty here. Like telling a seven year old girl she'll never amount to anything because she's too chicken or announcing over microphone that a ten year old girl has gained two pounds and therefore will look like her obese mother in no time. I hope the sport has changed for the better since 1988 but I'm skeptical.

What I Plan to Read Next

I don't know yet. I might follow my resolution to read more comics and give Iron Man Noir a try. Or I might continue my quest of chipping away at the unread but owned book piles - they really need it.
